On Sunday, Rory McIlroy blew away the competition at the Wells Fargo Championship. The 35-year-old shoot a score of 6-under 71 to win the event by five shots and claim his 26th PGA Tour win. This win has earned him praises from Paige Spiranac.

In 2023, the four-time major champion suffered several heartbreaks. Some near finishes and poor performances saw him being subjected to heavy trolling from the fans and even Spiranac. While sharing her predictions for major tournaments, she did not pick him and expressed that he has “broken” her heart several times with his performances.

The triumph at the Wells Fargo Championship is his second straight win. His previous start saw him team-up with Shane Lowry. The Irish duo emerged victorious following a play-off win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Taking to her X account, Paige Spiranac lauded his efforts and called him “insanely talented“. The social media influencer further claimed that it was “truly special” to see him perform at his best.

Rory is so insanely talented. It’s truly special watching him play when he has his best stuff.

Rory McIlroy admits he is a “way better” player now despite decade-long major drought

After winning his fourth major championship in 2014, Rory McIlroy seemed to be on the verge of tearing away every major record. However, since his win at the Valhalla course in August 2014, the North Irish golfer has not tasted major glory. Despite this, he claims he is a “way better” player now than he was before.

Speaking in a press conference after his win, McIlroy expressed that he has done everything else there is to do. Apart from winning the coveted green jacket at The Masters, McIlroy has collected multiple victories on both the PGA and DP World Tour.

I’ve been sort of banging this drum for the last few years, but I’m a way better player now than I was back then. I haven’t had the major record to back that up, but I’ve had the wins, I’ve done everything else there is to do in the game since 2014. The only thing I need to do is get another major.

Rory McIlroy said in a press conference.

His next stop is at the Valhalla course where he won his last major. With two wins from his last two starts, he has become one of the favorites heading into the event. He though faces a tough challenge to make it three wins on the bounce and end his decade-long major drought.

The playing field at the PGA Championship consists of almost everyone from the top 100 rankings in the Official Golf World Rankings (OWGR). LIV Golf star and defending champion Brooks Koepka along with World No.1, Scottie Scheffler are seen as two who can mount a strong challenge towards McIlroy. Only time will tell, who will come out on top this upcoming Sunday.
