Shorts CAN be chic… Twelve times Meghan Markle has let her legs do the talking – with more than a nod to Princess Diana’s ageless style

Meghan Markle once said that she had ‘legs as long as a mile’, so perhaps it’s no surprise that she likes to show them off.

And what better way than in a pair of classic shorts?

Often thought to be too casual for formal events,  Meghan, 41, shows that shorts can in fact be chic, with some of her ensembles borrowed straight from Princess Diana‘s look-book.

In her first public appearance in over a month, the Duchess of Sussex wore a £600  pink linen two-piece from STAUD to watch the LA Lakers basketball team with Prince Harry. The Maxwell outfit cost £360 for the blazer and £235 for the shorts.

The duchess layered the jacket over a white top and accessorised it with what appeared to be pumps from the AQUAZZURA Purist collection. She also carried a Prada Bibliotheque leather chain clutch which cost around £1,700.

The suit epitomised the mother-of-two’s relaxed yet elevated sense of style with its fresh twist on tailoring.

Not that this is the first time she has wowed in a pair of shorts.

Before her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018, Meghan was a notable fan of the style, happy to wear them even for glamourous red carpet events.

Now, since moving back to her hometown of LA, the Duchess reverted to her former  style.

As her former business manager, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, told The Mail on Sunday, Meghan is proud of her pins and knows their value.

‘She took me to one side and emphasised that she had “legs as long as a mile”, demanding that our agency do our best to secure her a substantial offer to showcase this “asset”‘ wrote Ms Nelthorpe Cowne.

On her way to an appearance on the Today Show in 2016, Meghan showed off her legs in an incredible light-blue linen short suit. She paired the powerful two-piece with a silky white button-down, a berry-coloured bag, and nude heels.

Meghan re-wore the short suit three months later to the ARTS 25th Anniversary party, but paired it with a pair of black heels the second time around.

While promoting her series Suits in New York in 2016, Meghan stepped out in a relaxed-fit Meghan Maven Veronica Beard Beatriz blazer and short suit combination, showing yet again how shorts can work in every scenario.

The tailored outfit was styled to a business casual degree as the Duchess paired it with a light t-shirt and black handbag.

While the Duchess typically favours block colours, she looked incredibly chic in £670 wide-leg shorts from go-to brand Khaite and a polka dot blouse to cheer on Harry at the polo in May 2022.

Showing how shorts can be styled with class, Meghan finished the black-and-white outfit with an oversized sun hat, a £410 black patent belt by Khaite and her favourite £500 Aquazzura pumps.

On another visit to support her husband play polo in June 2022, Meghan wore a long-sleeve denim button-down top over a pair of loose-fitting ‘Lane’ $148 denim shorts from the brand Dôen, which featured a high waist and A-line silhouette.

She accessorised the cool and comfortable summer ensemble with Grecian-style sandals, simple gold jewellery and a pair of large black sunglasses.

Just a month prior, the mother-of-two rocked a pair of baggy black summer shorts with a relaxed white blazer and Chanel flats during an outing at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.

She accessorised the effortlessly chic outfit with a pair of oversized Valentino sunglasses.

Her blazer appeared almost identical to the Valentino one she wore to the Invictus Games in the Netherlands in April 2022 – a perfect blend of high fashion with casual occasion.

Looking back at Meghan’s style, it is clear that she is no stranger to the short and shirt combination. One of her first appearances in her now iconic style was when she was seen at the Peninsula Hotel in 2009.

Meghan was dressed in a laid-back black shirt and matching shorts, showing off her long legs in the process. She paired the all-black outfit with a casual pair of beige sandals and sunglasses which hung from her shirt.

The 41-year-old also rocks her signature short look off the red carpet, as shown when she arrived at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, to resume filming Suits in 2020.

The former actress dressed in casual black shorts with a blazer to match, along with a white fedora hat and two bags slung over her shoulders.

Meghan’s love for styling shorts is without a doubt a nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who was known for wearing shorts on many occasions.

The Duchess of Sussex shared the late Princess’s love of tailored shorts when she joined Gloria Steinem for lunch in New York last July.

She teamed her navy Dior Bermuda shorts with a crisp white shirt and £545 Manolo Blahnik ‘BB 105’ pumps in a cognac shade to match her £50 Lauren Ralph Lauren leather belt.

The outfit was reminiscent of one worn by Princess Diana while out for a meal at London’s San Lorenzo Restaurant in 1990.

The polished princess demonstrated how to wear tailored shorts in the city, pairing a black pair with a matching blazer with gold detailing – instantly elevating the ensemble.

However, the stylish pair also know exactly how to style the shorts for a casual occasion.

While on holiday at Walt Disney World in Florida in 1993, Diana stepped out in beige Bermuda shorts, a white t-shirt and a brown belt.

TV and celebrity fashion expert Miranda Holder, founder of the Feel Good Fashion Coach, previously told MailOnline: ‘Tailored shorts are a natural choice for Meghan and perfect for her signature minimalist but elegant style.

‘Princess Diana was the first Royal to whet our appetite for the humble short – the style icon was often spotted showing off her shapely legs in cycling shorts in the 80s – a look which has today circled back around again. She was also a fan of the tailored short, usually wearing them with flats as she had no need to add any extra length to her legs to carry off the look.

‘Meghan is very possibly taking her style cues from the late Diana, who never put an immaculately clad fashion foot wro
