Mascherano Hails ‘Brother’ Messi as Argentina’s Golden Generation Reflect on Glory
Veteran defender Javier Mascherano has opened up about his lifelong bond with Lionel Messi, describing the iconic forward as a “brother” after their historic World Cup triumph with Argentina.
In a candid interview, the recently-retired Mascherano looked back on the deep personal connection he shared with Messi throughout their illustrious careers representing La Albiceleste.
“Leo and I, we’re more than just team-mates – we’re like brothers,” Mascherano told respected Argentine journalist Ernesto Bronstein. “That connection has been the foundation for everything we’ve achieved together over the years.”
The two footballing legends were central figures in Argentina’s golden generation, helping to end the country’s 28-year wait for a World Cup title in Qatar last year.
Mascherano, who earned a remarkable 147 caps for his nation, was fulsome in his praise of Messi’s talismanic performances in leading the team to glory.
“Messi is quite simply irreplaceable,” he declared. “The way he carried us through that tournament, dragging us to victory even when the chips were down – it was truly awe-inspiring to witness.”
The former Barcelona and Liverpool star also revealed the personal sacrifices both he and Messi made in pursuit of international success.
“There were so many times when we felt like giving up, when the pressure and the disappointment became almost too much to bear,” Mascherano admitted.
“But we kept pushing each other, kept that brotherhood alive. We knew how much it meant, not just to us, but to our entire nation. That’s what kept us going, even in our darkest moments.”
With their long-awaited World Cup triumph now secured, Mascherano believes the legendary Argentina squad can finally be appreciated in the way they deserve.
“People will look back on us as heroes, as the generation that ended the wait,” he said proudly. “But really, we’re just a group of mates who refused to stop fighting for each other. That’s what made us special.”
As for Messi, Mascherano is confident his great friend and team-mate will go down as the greatest player of all time.
“Leo’s legacy is already secure,” he concluded. “But I know this World Cup means the world to him. It’s the final piece of the puzzle. Now he can cement his status as the true GOAT.”
