Although it’s been almost a month since the season came to an end for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, it was still a big week as he became the first Spur since Tim Duncan and third overall to be named Rookie of the Year. He was also just the sixth player ever to receive the award unanimously. Then, a day later, he came in runner up for Defensive Player of the Year, and while many will argue he should have won, it’s still a historic accomplishment for a rookie.
Wemby was in San Antonio when the award was announced, using the practice facility as his backdrop, and before heading back to France to prepare for the Olympics, he recorded one last heartfelt thank you. He thanked everyone from his trainers, coaches and Spurs staff to teammates and fans. He also thanked Spurs legends David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Sean Elliott, who helped build the culture he hopes to carry on and have been here helping him. Finally, he thanked the city as a whole, from those who were there to greet him on day one, to mural creators and breakfast taco makers,
Wemby has as much love for the Spurs and city of San Antonio as we do for him, so here’s to many more great years to come. Merci, Victor!
