Why did the 49ers give Jauan Jennings $10.5 million after 19 catches?

Given that Jauan Jennings is a wide receiver who has never amassed big numbers — he had 19 catches last year and he’s never had more than 35 in his three-season career — this number could be surprising to some: $10.5 million.

That’s how much guaranteed money the San Francisco 49ers included in the two-year contract Jennings, 26, signed Wednesday that will keep him with the team through the 2025 season. The payout is a reflection of how much production Jennings provides that isn’t reflected on a stat sheet.

A ferocious run-blocker with a knack for making big catches in key moments, earning him the nickname “Third and Jauan,” Jennings’ value was on full display in last year’s postseason.

In a divisional-playoff win against the Packers, Jennings drove cornerback Carrington Valentine so deep into the visitor’s sideline that they ended up by the Gatorade coolers, a viral block that sprang tight end George Kittle on a 32-yard catch. Jennings then made a strong bid to become the game’s MVP in the 49ers’ loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII: He had four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown and added a 21-yard scoring pass, becoming the second player to have a passing touchdown and receiving score in a Super Bowl.

During the game, in the moments after Jennings’ 10-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown grab, linebacker Fred Warner was captured by NFL Films marveling at a teammate who is largely overshadowed on an offense that includes five All-Pro players and Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy.

“I’ve been saying,” Warner said, “he’s one the best football players I’ve ever played with.”

On Wednesday, it was Kittle who was singing Jennings’ praises after his teammate signed a deal that has a maximum value of $15.4 million.

“I think every single person in the NFL that watches tape, every general manager, every scout, anybody that watches tape, they look at Jauan’s film and they’re like, ‘ Holy cow, this guy is one of one,’” Kittle said. “His mindset and his attitude when he’s on a football field is completely different.

“He goes to that dark place … and he’s just very violent in the way that he plays the game, which you don’t see in all receivers. He will hit defensive ends as hard as he can. He’ll hit linebackers as hard as he can. He’s not scared of anything.”

Jennings had been a restricted free agent and the 49ers had placed the second-round tender on him in March. However, Jennings never signed his one-year tender, which would have paid him $4.89 million in 2024, in favor of a multi-year contract that provides more security.

In exchange, the 49ers have a bit more long-term security when it comes to their wide receiver corps, which will likely be without one of its two headliners in 2025. Last month, the 49ers tacitly acknowledged they will be unable to afford to keep both Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel when they used their first-round pick on Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall.

Aiyuk is not participating in offseason practices while he’s seeking a contract extension worth more than $25 million annually. If he lands such a deal, it’s more likely the 49ers will trade or release Samuel next year, when he’s scheduled to count $24.2 million against the salary cap.

Depending on Pearsall’s development, Jennings, who had 19 catches for 265 yards last year, could be needed to take on a more prominent pass-catching role in 2025. He has experience doing so. Last season, after Samuel exited with a shoulder injury in the second quarter of the divisional-round win over Green Bay, Jennings had five receptions for 61 yards on six targets and accounted for four first downs in the final 41 minutes.

However, he’s better known for his ruggedness rather than receptions. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has said Jennings is likely the most ferocious run-blocking wideout he’s had in his 20-season NFL career. And Aiyuk and Samuel, both excellent blockers, have credited Jennings’ influence.

“He shows up every day loving the game with a great attitude every single day and then you get to game day and he makes all those plays,” Kittle said. “That’s someone you want to keep around … That’s someone that you want to pay. Because he’s just going to keep bringing it every single day and raise the standard of everyone around him.”

Briefly: Running back Christian McCaffrey did not participate in Wednesday’s voluntary practice after missing last week’s sessions. … Kittle, Warner and pass rusher Nick Bosa observed practice from the sideline. Kittle is recovering from core-muscle surgery and expects to be ready for the start of training camp in late July.
